Expected Detours.
Preparing for unexpected obstacles is a smart way to start with any lifestyle change/goal. For example, when trying to modify what to eat…social events, hobbies, and even work could create obstacles in fulfilling that goal.
Thinking of those unexpected obstacles ahead of time and having a plan of action, can keep goals on track.
For example, let’s say, a workout schedule finally got implemented, 4 times a week, but then a business trip comes up and changes the whole regiment. There are a few ways to go about planning ahead. Ask a few questions:
Does the hotel have a gym or other amenities? Most hotels have gym rooms, though they may not have everything, it’s something
Does your gym have a location there? Possible, if it’s domestic
Do you have a workout app to use in your room? Most hotels offer free WiFi
Are there other activities offered to get your physical activity in? A lot of places offer yoga or other wellness workshops, as well as excursions
Or maybe too many drinks were had one night and the hangover threw the whole routine off track. We will discuss motivation in another blog, but some plan-aheads could be:
I can “party” on Saturday’s and Thursday’s in order to avoid a hangover on work-out days
I know this wedding falls on this day, I’m going to change my work-out schedule that week to accommodate
Saying no to going out that night and reschedule or let your friends know your schedule ahead of time
Most importantly, don’t get down on yourself! Expect imperfection, tomorrow is another day
Another could be food intake. Changing a diet comes with a lot of challenges, which blogs will touch on, but for this one, one’s social health can effect food goals. Food is actually a social thing. Food is not always, but usually accompanied, with company. If there’s a celebration, a long meeting, music in the park, even a funeral…food will be involved. Sometimes to stay in control, avoiding events is an option, but that kinda sucks! Food is a pleasure and can be enjoyed. Try to plan ahead and ask questions:
Will there be something there I could eat? More people are becoming health conscious or considerate and will offer at least 1 vegetarian or vegan option, as well as restaurants
Are you going to be at someones house? You can bring your own prepared food or have it delivered
What if I can’t eat anything there? Keep healthier snacks on you
I’m traveling and have never been there before…check out restaurants and menus ahead of time, bring healthy snacks or shop for some; every city has a market
Isn’t it annoying to modify meals? it’s not annoying, and if it is, who cares!
Could I eat at home before? Sometimes we need to do this, if you are going out to dinner, check out the menu on Yelp to see what is offered
